The 4th of July in the states is a time of celebration, a time of remembrance and a summer version of Thanksgiving when we realize and pay tribute to those who have made our country into a democracy and free nation. The freedoms we are granted are above reproach. We celebrate with cook outs, hot dogs, hamburgers, mom’s apple pie and fireworks.
At yesterday’s cookout, we had all the trimmings of a picturesque fourth of July. Our yellow Lab Max was in hog or in this case dog heaven. That was until the fireworks started.
Fireworks and dogs rarely mix. I could see the alarm and angst from Max as every boom sounded and the kids and neighbors OHH’d and Ahh’d.
I new I had to distract Max and make his 4th of July a memorable experience. We were all enjoying ourselves and it only seemed natural to let Max, the yellow Lab, have a found memory as well. As any good dog owner would do, I looked for Max’s favorite treat.
The 12 inch Bully Stick had his name on it. Max grabbed the Bully Stick and went his separate way. The Booms, Ohhs and Ahhs as the fireworks show echoed overhead, didn’t seem to bother Max.
I looked over at Max, he winked at me, letting me know, that all he wanted was his 12 Inch Bully Stick. Maybe next year I will give it to him earlier so he doesn’t have to give another academy award winning performance.
He has his treat, and his forth of July for 2008 seemed to finished on a high note!
