People Foods You Should Avoid Feeding Your Dog
Owners often make the mistake of giving people foods to their canines. It’s important to realize that doing so is dangerous. First, the foods you and your family eat may contain ingredients that your pet is unable to metabolize as easily as his own food. This means he is more likely to gain weight. Second, there are a variety of foods that people eat on a regular basis that can cause serious health problems for canines.
With this mind, we’ll describe several food items that you should avoid giving your dog, even if he begs for them. Your pet will not restrict himself. He needs you to do so for him.
Certain Fruits And Vegetables
People are accustomed to thinking of fruits and vegetables as healthy food items. So, they often give both to their dogs without considering the possible consequences. Specific fruits can be very harmful. For example, grapes and raisins contain a toxin that can be ingested by canines in small amounts, but will damage their kidneys in large amounts. Avocados are another fruit that can cause problems. The side effects are usually limited to diarrhea and vomiting.
Onions can cause serious issues with a dog’s gastrointestinal tract. In some cases, the elements found in them can make the animal more susceptible to developing anemia (i.e. low red blood cell count).
In small doses, fruits and vegetables may be fine. But it’s safer to refrain from giving them to your canine altogether.
Mushrooms
There are a number of toxins contained in mushrooms that can wreak havoc with your dog’s body. The toxins vary by the type of mushroom. Some can damage his heart and kidneys. Others may affect his liver. Still others can impact your pet’s nervous system to the point of causing shock or a coma. Seizures, abdominal pain, and drooling may also occur.
The danger with mushrooms is that they can be found in gardens or the shrubbery along streets. This means your canine might eat them without your notice while you are taking him for walks. Be aware of your surroundings. If your pet ventures away from you, make sure you know what lies in his path.
Uncooked Meat
Canines love to eat meat. Be aware of his access to raw meat since it can contain harmful bacteria (e.g. E. coli). The bacteria can induce abdominal pain and vomiting. Even cooked meats can present a problem. The bones can easily become wedged in your pet’s throat, preventing him from breathing. Or, a sharp bone might pass through his gastrointestinal tract, perforating his intestines along the way.
Desserts, Caffeine, And Alcohol
Keep sweet foods, such as desserts, out of your canine’s reach. His body may be unable to metabolize the processed ingredients effectively. Not only can the desserts cause him to develop gum disease, but your dog will also be more susceptible to unwanted weight gain.
Chocolate and coffee also present a problem. Both contain methylxanthines, which can affect your pet’s nervous system and heart. Tiny amounts may not produce symptoms, but large amounts can cause vomiting, bloating, heart rate irregularities, and seizures. In extreme cases, death can occur.
Alcohol should also be kept out of your dog’s reach. Large amounts can induce a coma, and in rare cases, death.
Although you may be tempted to share your food and beverages with your dog, resist the temptation. Restrict his diet to his own food. Doing so will help to prevent unnecessary health problems.
